Description |
Mater Dei Hospital (MDH) is the main general teaching and public hospital on the Islands of Malta and Gozo. This healthcare facility provides comprehensive services for the management of both adults and children with acute and/or chronic diseases. It offers care in all the main medical specialities. The Department of Child and Adolescent Medicine provides care for children with acute or chronic diseases from birth until 16 years of age. All paediatric subspecialties are represented including paediatric nephrology. Children with renal problems are managed by the renal team both as in-patients and in out-patient clinics. Dialysis is performed in collaboration with the adult unit. Transition clinics with the adult services are organised regularly. The renal team has close ties with the University of Malta in certain areas of renal research. The adult renal division at MDH involves a multidisciplinary team who is responsible for the diagnosis and management of kidney disease in the Maltese population. Renal replacement therapy is offered to around 300 end-stage kidney disease patients. Living and deceased-donor transplantation is performed in collaboration with the hospital's surgical department. This division deals with all types of adult kidney pathology within the Maltese islands both on an inpatient and outpatient basis. These include podocytopathies, glomerulopathies, tubulopathies, vasculitides, hereditary renal disease and stone disease amongst others. The Urology and Paediatric Surgery units are both within the remit of the Clinical Department for Surgery. |
