Description

The Ist Department of Pediatrics at Semmelweis University is the largest pediatric nephrology center in Hungary. It takes care of children with chronic renal failure awaiting kidney transplantation, offering both peritoneal and hemodialysis, and follows up more than 100 kidney transplant children. Renal transplantation is performed in the neighbouring Department of Transplantation of Semmelweis University. The Ist Department of Pediatrics also hosts the principal neonatal surgery unit in Hungary with a ward dedicated for the care of newborns and infants with surgical (urological and gastrointestinal) disorders. Children with acute kidney failure, referred from the whole country with HUS or other etiology are regularly treated in this center. The intensive care unit routinely performs CKRT and therapeutic plasma exchange using Prismaflex System. There are approximately 80-100 treatments per year, the lower limit of CKRT and TPE is 2kg. The hemodialysis unit, as the single pediatric hemodialysis unit in Hungary, performs approximately 1800 hemodialysis and 50 plasmapheresis treatments per year. The nephrology unit, performing 20-30 biopsies per year, works in close collabaration with three nephropathologists from the Department of Pathology. A nephrogenetic outpatient clinic, dedicated for both children and adults with kidney disorders, is also hosted in the Ist Department of Pediatrics. Routine genetic tests (Sanger sequencing and QMSPF) are performed in the Department and those requiring multiple parallel sequencing are performed in collaboration with other Departments of the University. A research laboratory supported by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, is dedicated for the research of kidney disorders. It identified a novel gene and mechanisms in steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome.
