The KannerKlinik of the Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg is the National Center of Reference for pediatric patients in Luxembourg, and as such provides comprehensive services for the management of children with complex acute and chronic conditions in all pediatric subspecialties. The Pediatric Nephrology Unit of the KannerKlinik provides health care for all major renal diseases, including congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT), nephrotic syndrome and glomerular diseases, hypertension, nephrolithiasis and metabolic diseases, tubulopathies, genetic diseases (polycystic kidney diseases and ciliopathies), hemolytic and uremic syndrome, and systemic diseases such as lupus. Whenever necessary, renal biopsies are performed on-site and analyzed by experienced partner pathologists. The Pediatric Nephrology Unit also offers renal replacement therapy (peritoneal dialysis and CVVH) and kidney transplantation preparation and follow-up to the pediatric patients in Luxembourg. The care of pediatric patients with complex renal diseases relies on a multidisciplinary approach, involving various pediatric specialists, including pediatric urologists, cardiologists, radiologists, oncologists, and neurologists. The pediatric nephrologists of the KannerKlinik are also involved in prenatal diagnosis within a large multidisciplinary group including geneticists, obstetricians, radiologists and surgeons. A privileged partnership with geneticists from the National Laboratory of Health in Luxembourg has been developed over the years, to explore rare and complex inherited diseases affecting the kidneys, using the latest sequencing technologies. Finally, the pediatric nephrologists of the Unit, along with other pediatric specialists of the KannerKlinik, and with the University of Luxembourg, are involved in the development of a clinical research center dedicated to rare pediatric diseases. |
