Clinic for Nephrology and Clinical Immunology

Description

Our Clinic for Nephrology and Clinical Immunology offers the full spectrum of the state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment procedures, including the full care of complex nephrological adult patients. The director of the clinic, Prof. Jürgen Floege, serves as the Editor-in-Chief for the last 3 editions of the top-selling medical textbook in the field “Comprehensive Clinical Nephrology” by Elsevier. He is known at an international level as one of the leading experts for IgA nephropathy and the field of glomerulonephritis (author of glomerulonephritis review in Lancet). He has led the revision of the Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) Clinical Practice Guidelines for the treatment of glomerular diseases (published in 2021). Prof. Marcus Moeller is an established international expert for FSGS and he coauthored the KDIGO controversies group on this topic. He has organized international conferences on rare diseases in nephrology. He is coordinating the national research consortium by the German Ministry for Science and Education (BMBF) on rare diseases termed “STOP-FSGS”. Prof. Moeller leads a highly specialized glomerulonephritis outpatient clinic within our clinic. It is now embedded in the Heisenberg Chair for Preventive and Translational Nephrology. The outpatient clinic serves a tertial referral center for German and international patients. The glomerulonephritis clinic provides the full spectrum of diagnostic, therapeutic, as well as social and rehabilitation services as well as genetic counselling. Clinical trials and off-label treatments initiated and/or executed at our center have facilitated treatment of glomerular diseases in the past. The clinic is an integral part of RWTH Aachen University which was declared an ‘University of Excellence' by the German federal and state governments initiative in 2007 and has been renewed in 2019. The University Hospital Aachen University houses a Center for Rare Diseases (ZEAS) to which our outpatient clinic is assigned as well.
