Description |
The department of Nephrology of the University Medical Center Groningen consist of an outpatient clinic with >3000 patients per year, a dialysis center, and a 32-bed nursing ward. This expert center has a multidisciplinary team, among which (pediatric)nephrologists, geneticists, radiologists, anesthesiologists, hepatologists, urologists, psychologists and social workers. It provides specialized care for patients with polycystic and other rare kidney diseases. This care involves for instance (genetic) diagnostics, assessment of prognosis (e.e. estimating age at which end-stage kidney disease will be reached), prevention of kidney function decline, treatment of renal and extrarenal symptoms, and genetic counseling. Our expertise center also harbors a large research team, that performs experimental and especially translational research. Members of the team are involved in several clinical trials in various domains of nephrology. Moreover, several of them participate in (inter)national consortia and registries. They are also part of writing groups of national and international guidelines. In this work close collaboration with the patient group is sought, among others by regular contacts with representatives of the national kidney patient federation and by organizing information evenings, specific for the institution, but also on a national level. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
