Description

IKEM is the largest specialized clinical and science & research institute in the Czech Republic, focused
on cardiovascular diseases, organ transplantation, diabetology, nephrology and metabolic disorders. IKEM accounted for 60% of all kidney transplants in the Czech Republic with 300 transplant performed annually. Department of Nephrology takes care of significant part (roughly 25%) of CKD patients in the entire country. Department of Nephrology is the leading center for management of the whole spectrum of nephrology care, i.e. clinical nephrology and all aspects of renal replacement therapy, especially kidney transplantation, peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis. There are 3000 kidney transplant recipients regularly followed at the center. Diagnostics of primary nephropathies, posttransplant care and CKD-related complications have been treated in the clinical ward. Outpatients clinic specializes on posttransplant care, CKD follow-up, especially glomerular disorders, PKD and diagnostics and therapy of rare diseases such as thrombotic microangiopathies, tuberous sclerosis, vasculitides, and inherited tubulopathies. The dialysis department performs aside of dialysis methods a broad spectrum of apheretic techniques - plasmapheresis, immunoabsorption, and rheopheresis. Department of Nephrology is the leading clinical research facility collaborating with several international working groups and scientific consortia in the field of organ transplantation and nephrology that yield in publications in high-rank journals. Collaboration has been established with other IKEM teams in the field of rare diseases (biochemistry, immunology, hepatology, cardiology at IKEM), molecular diagnostics (1st and 2nd Medical Faculties of Charles University in Prague). In the field of TMA there is fruitful collaboration already set with Semmelweis University in Budapest (prof. Prohazska, genetics), University of Alberta in Edmonton (prof. Halloran, transcriptomics). The primary research and clinical interest of IKEM ERK center is post-transplant TMA and aHUS.
