Description

The Sophia Children’s Hospital is a full-facility, stand-alone pediatric hospital, embedded in the Erasmus MC in the heart of Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Its catchment area covers the southwestern part of the country with an estimated population of more than five million people. The multidisciplinary Pediatric Nephrology team is responsible for >2500 outpatient clinic visits and in-hospital consults, and >500 hospital-admissions per year. Together with adult nephrology, we coordinate the Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Rare Kidney and Urinary Tract Disease. Our nationally approved expertises are tubulopathies, cystic kidney disease, idiopathic nephrotic syndrome and congenital anomalies of the kidneys and urinary tract (CAKUT). We collaborate closely with pediatric urologists, adult nephrologists, clinical geneticists, obstetricians, pediatric/transplant surgeons, nephropathologists and pharmacists to provide the full spectrum of tertiary and quaternary pediatric nephrology care starting antenatally all the way up to adulthood. Moreover, we provide consultant services in the Sophia Children’s Hospital with the largest neonatal, pediatric and cardiac intensive care units in the Netherlands. We are one of the three national centers that performs acute and chronic dialysis (both hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis), plasma-exchange and kidney transplantation in children. Our pediatric transplantation program, which was established in 1975, currently performs >10 transplantations per year and has 80-100 patients actively in follow-up. Although we perform predominantly pre-emptive living donations, we offer all transplant strategies (including ABOi, cross-over and young-for-young). The pediatric transplantation program is embedded in the large adult kidney transplantation program of the Erasmus MC. Our translational research programs focus on pediatric kidney transplantation and CAKUT.
