Description

The Pediatric Nephrology Unit is the referral center in North-East Italy for the diagnosis and treatment of nephropathies, acute and chronic kidney disease in the overall pediatric age. The Unit is a national center of excellence for pediatric renal transplantation, with more than 500 transplants performed, especially in small children and in those with urological comorbidities. The staff consists of 7 attending physicians, 1 PhD student, a house staff of 8-10 residents and interns, 24 renal nurses, 1 dietician, 1 data manager, 1 clinical psychologist and 1 social worker. The Unit is divided into a semi-intensive care department equipped with 12 beds (350 hospitalizations per year), a service of hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis (3500 sessions performed per year). Also, it provides the full spectrum of acute kidney replacement therapies, ranging from neonatal to adolescent age, and an annual average of 3900 outpatient visits in ambulatory care clinics, which offer specialized treatment for CAKUT, primary and secondary glomerulonephritis, tubulopathies, rare diseases and systemic hypertension. The Unit includes a Laboratory of Immunopathology and Molecular Biology of the Kidney and hosts academic activities for the School of Medicine, the School of Paediatrics and Nephrology, the Ph. D. School in Developmental and Planning Sciences and the Masterschool in Paediatric Nephrology at the University of Padua. The Unit participates in several national and international studies, including clinical trials, clinical epidemiology and translational research.
