Nephrology, Dialysis and Kidney Transplantation Center

Description

The Nephrology, Dialysis and Kidney Transplantation center is located in the tertiary referral “Molinette Hospital”, part of the “AOU Città della Salute e della Scienza” of Turin, one of the largest hospitals in Italy.
The center is one of the largest and most complete in the Italian nephrological panorama and is specialized in the management of cases at high complexity, being a center of reference not only at a regional and national level, but also internationally speaking.
The center is composed by:
- the Transplant unit, that has the highest activity level of all transplant centers in Italy with more than 4000 kidney transplants performed since the opening in 1981 and 200 kidneys transplanted in 2021. Our group has an important expertise in the management of kidney transplantation, particularly in patients that have an important burden of comorbidities or are affected by rare kidney diseases. In our center, with the expertise of dedicated surgeons and urologists, kidney transplantation from deceased donors (DBD and DCD) and living donors (also from ABO-incompatible donors) and combined liver-kidney, pancreas-kidney, lung-kidney and heart-kidney transplants are performed.
- four dialysis centers (two of them in the hospital setting) that perform 39000 haemodialysis sessions yearly, creation of vascular accesses and placement of haemodialysis and peritoneal catheters. Our dialysis services also provide renal replacement therapy in the acute setting, with one of the most relevant range of patients on dialysis in ICUs.
- the unit of Nephrology, that accounts for 500 admissions yearly; all nephrological diseases are managed, ranging from diagnosis by renal biopsy to immunosuppressive therapy, plasma exchange or use of monoclonal antibodies.
- ambulatory services in the main building (Molinette), in the traumatological center building (CTO) and in the obstetric hospital concerning nephropathies and pregnancy.
