Description

The Department of Pediatric Nephrology of University Hospitals Leuven is a reference center for children with rare kidney diseases in Belgium with a catchment population of 5 million and more than 2500 outpatient contacts and 500 hospitalizations per year. We provide the full spectrum of acute and chronic renal replacement therapies from neonatal to adolescent age. Our team includes nephrologists, urologists, dieticians, specialized nurses, psychologist, social worker and geneticists and together, we provide multi-disciplinary care for children of all ages with complex and rare kidney pathologies including a prenatal consultation clinic and a transition clinic.
The clinical service is complemented by a specialized Pediatric Nephrology Research Laboratory within the department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine of the KU Leuven. Our research focuses on identifying mechanisms and novel treatments for inherited renal diseases in human cell and animal models. The group participates in various European Research projects and provides PhD and post-doctoral training for students coming from all continents.
