Description

The University Hospital Essen is the largest hospital in the Ruhr Metropolitan Area. Highly specialized clinics offer full medical and psychosocial services for patients with all kinds of rare kidney diseases from prenatal consulting to transition into adult care. In particular, the University of Essen runs one of the largest services for acute and chronic pediatric renal replacement therapies in Germany providing all extracorporal and peritoneal dialysis technologies for all age groups including premature neonates. In addition, we offer a range of specialized extracorporal blood purification techniques e.g. plasma exchange, immune adsorption techniques and lipid apheresis addressing also patients with non-renal disease as rare neurological autoimmune disorders. Organ Transplantation has been one major focus of our University hospital for many years regarding research and therapy with our hospital being in a leading position in the Eurotransplant region since 2008. Our special expertise includes transplantation in children less than 10kg body weight as well as in patients with complex anatomical situation as thrombosis of renal or caval vein. Special conditioning protocols are established for ABO-incompatible transplantation and highly sensitized patients. Furthermore, the University of Essen is one out 3 centers in Germany offering combined kidney and liver transplantation in children with rare kidney disease also affecting liver function. In addition, we offer the full range of clinical and research diagnostics combining high personal expertise and state-of-the-art tools and laboratories. Experimental research is complemented by coordination of patient registries and participation in national and international clinical studies.
