The Department of Pediatric Nephrology and Transplantation at the Helsinki University Hospital, is the largest service for children´s rare kidney diseases in Finland. The multidisciplinary team offers renal services, such as diagnostics and therapeutic management, for children of all ages. The unit provides acute and chronic hemo- and peritoneal dialysis on a 24/7 basis. It is also responsible for all pediatric solid organ transplantations in Finland and is a member of Scandia Transplant Organization. So far, more than 500 organ transplantations have been performed in our unit including around 300 kidney transplantations. The long-term graft survival is excellent with a top-position in European pediatric kidney transplant registry. The unit has a wide range of basic and clinical research activities dealing with the pathophysiology of congenital nephrotic syndrome and tubulointerstitial nephritis, management of infants with chronic renal failure and nephrosis, as well as optimizing the therapy of kidney transplant children and adolescents. | ||||||||||
