Description

Adult renal patient care at the Semmelweis University is provided at the Division of Nephrology of the Department of Medicine and Oncology, and at the Department of Surgery, Transplantation and Gastroenterology. The former hosts an inpatient ward (18 beds), outpatient clinic, hemo- and peritoneal dialysis unit, a plasmapheresis center, and the Department has a special clinic for rare adult metabolic diseases. As a university center the diseases evaluated and cared for encompass the whole spectrum of renal conditions, with special interest in systemic and primary glomerular diseases. With about 40-50 kidney biopsies, approximately 1000 plasmapheresis (300 photopheresis), approximately 20000 in center hemodialysis (1800 acute, eg. ICU) sessions performed and 8000 peritoneal dialysis days, the division is among the largest in the country. The Department of Surgery, Transplantation and Gastroenterology is responsible for the whole complexity of kidney transplantation. The perioperative surgical unit (10 beds) performs yearly 160-180 kidney transplantations with about 20% living donation, and the transplant nephrology ward (10 beds) for posttransplant complications with its own dialysis unit is responsible for the inpatient care (ICU, radiology onsite). The outpatient clinic follows-up about 2200 renal recipients. The Department is the largest transplant center in the country, being responsible for more than half of the population. Here pancreas and liver transplantation will also be performed.
