Description

AOU Città della Salute e della Scienza di Torino, has a pediatric Department “Dipartimento Patologia e Cura del Bambino “Regina Margherita” with all the medical and surgical pediatric specialties and tecnologies to care children since neonatal age, including low birth weight newborns. The department is a tertiary referral public center serving an area of about 5 millions inhabitants and 500,000 children. The Nephrology Unit is accredited as regional and national reference for rare kidney diseases, severe chronic kidney diseases and dialysis in children, pediatric kidney transplantation and complex glomerular diseases.
The multidisciplinary team provides advanced and specialized care for patients with kidney disease from prenatal age with prenatal consultations to adolescence. The team covers all aspects of pediatric nephrology, including rare renal diseases, acute and chronic renal failure, dialysis and transplantation. Since 2000, we have performed more than 120 pediatric kidney transplants including combined liver-kidney transplantation. Integrated care is offered until 18 years old and a transitional program is organized and shared with the patients' families and the local or adult nephrology referral center according to the type of disease and the geographical area of residence. The integrated pathways allow full care of all disease aspects and rehabilitation with multidisciplinary care and social support in coordination with general pediatric practitioners, local services and schools.
The genetic and metabolic facilities of the hospital offer advance diagnostic tests for most rare diseases affecting the kidneys., entirely covered by the national sanitary service. The scientific activities are supported by the University departments of Transplantation and Immunology and Biotechnology where are located research laboratories for basic science and applied clinical research.
We participate and promote different European registries and academic or industry driven clinical trials.
