Nephrology Division

Description

The Nephrology Division offers a comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic approach for all glomerular, tubular, and vascular diseases of the kidney, mostly in adults but also in children, taking advantage not only from the expertise of the staff components of the Division but also from those of the other departments of the Hospital. Patients receive assistance from the diagnostic phase to long term follow up, and are eventually offered all options for renal replacement therapy. Activities that are worth mentioning are the following:
Renal Pathology; Clinical Pathology; Diagnostic Imaging; Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory. The Nephrology Division provides acute and chronic dialysis, tailoring the dialysis to the need of the patient, with the appropriate technique. Other blood purification methods (plasma exchange, immunabsorption) are available. The Division is actively involved in clinical studies and trials, in the field of Nephrology, with a strong attitude toward development of independent, academic studies to respond to real health needs.
The Division has a vocation to research that developes in collaboration with the Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacology Research.
The main areas of reasearch of the Renal Division that are relevant to the Network are the following:
Recurrent and Familial Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome/Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura; Steroid-Resistant Nephrotic Syndrome (SRNS); Complement abnormalities in primary membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis; Membranous nephropathy; Polycystic kidney disease; Renal transplantation
