The adult nephrology unit at University Medical Centre is one of two nephrological departments in Slovenia, that are part of a University hospital. Out of the two, the Ljubljana departmen is the bigger one. We evaluate and treat the most complicated renal patients from all over our country. We perform the most kidney biopsies in the country and treat the vast majority of patients with glomerular diseases, tubulointerstitial diseases, patients with diverse causes of thrombotic microangiopathy. We have all of the standard and above standard diagnostic procedures available (ie. routine electron microscopy of biopsies, coprehensive complement analysis - without routine genetic screening, ADAMTS 13, all immunoserology tests, all diverse microbiology tests etc). We also have an in-house ultrasound clinic, where we perform our own ultrasound examinations of kidneys and AV fistulas, including Doppler examination. We have a clinic and research urine laboratory as part of our Department, where we perform routine urine examinations for selected patients, including phase contrast microscopy and polarisation microscopy. We have the larges dialysis center in the country, that takes care of chronic and acute dialysis patients. We offer all forms of extracorporeal treatments, including HD, HDF, HF, all continous dialysis methods, membranous plasmapheresis, immunoadsorption, hemoadsoprtion, Cytosorb, LDL apheresis, and hemodialysis procedures for acute dialysis of children of all ages. The Center for Kidney Transplantation, the only one in our country, is also part of our Department. We also participate in various multidiscplinary teams, including a combined hematology-nephrology team, that evaulates all MGRS patients in our country. We are also dedicated to performing metabolic evaluation of patients with recurrent kidney stones. Our Department has 39 hospital beds and 24 consultant nephrologists. |
