Nephrology and dialysis unit

Description

The Pediatric Nephrology and Dialysis Unit provides comprehensive care for children affected by kidney diseases, including rare renal disorders, with more than 2,000 inpatient admissions and 3,000 outpatient visits per year. The Unit is staffed by a multidisciplinary team that includes consultants in nephrology and pediatrics, specialized nurses, and biologists, offering integrated medical and psychosocial support for children of all ages, as well as prenatal counseling services.
The team also works closely with a wide range of specialists, including pediatric radiologists, urologists, and geneticists. Notably, children with nephro-urological disorders are managed through an integrated care pathway, jointly evaluated by both nephrologists and urologists, and directed to surgical or medical treatment as appropriate.
Our Unit hosts an in-house Nephrogenetics Laboratory, which provides advanced genetic testing, including targeted resequencing and whole-exome sequencing. This dedicated facility enables rapid and accurate molecular diagnoses for nearly all rare renal diseases, a crucial step in guiding clinical decision-making and improving patient outcomes.
In addition to clinical care, the Unit is strongly committed to research, encompassing both clinical and basic science. Our research activities include genetic and experimental studies carried out within the Nephrogenetics Laboratory, ensuring a continuous integration between patient care and scientific advancement.
