Description

The 12 de Octubre University Hospital in Madrid is a tertiary center with a high level of specialization that meets all the necessary requirements to participate in the ERKNet network. The Nephrology Department was designated as a national referral centre for complex glomerular national reference centre for complex glomerular diseases, including rare glomerulopathies and immune-mediated immune-mediated glomerular diseases. The Hospital has an extensive experience and is a national and international reference center in the field of thrombotic microangiopathies, tubulopathies and tubulointerstitial disorders, metabolic-based renal diseases, hereditary renal disorders. This Unit has a multidisciplinary approach (Immunology, Genetics, Haematology, Nephropathology) for the different renal pathologies. The “Clinical Nephrology” research group has, as its main objectives, the study of kidney diseases to prevent or slow down its progression, thus avoiding the need for dialysis and transplantation. Most of the group’s activities are focused on clinical observational studies and prospective therapeutic trials, many of them published in highest-rank international journals of Urology and Nephrology and other cathegories. The main objectives and priority research lines of the group include: Primary glomerulonephritis, the clinical and molecular pathogenic mechanisms of IgA nephropathy progression, and the recurrence of glomerular diseases in kidney grafts. Renal diseases caused by complement dysregulation, including primary and secondary hemolytic uremic syndrome, C3 glomerulopathies. Systemic diseases, with special interest for lupus nephritis and vasculitis. In all these fields, the group has achieved relevant results and publications, with a sustained and active participation in international forums and in the most prestigious therapeutic guidelines (KDIGO on glomerular diseases, EULAR-EDTA on lupus nephritis, Spanish consensus guidelines on lupus nephritis and haemolytic-uremic syndrome). As a University Hospital, Hospital 12 de Octubre offers grade and postgraduate teaching, with numerous academical activities and exchange programs linked to other national and European centers.
