Julio Pascual

Julio Pascual is currently the Medical Director at Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre, Madrid, Spain. He undertook his residency at the Department of Nephrology, Ramón y Cajal Hospital, Madrid, Spain, before becoming a staff member in 1991. He got his PhD with a thesis on cardiovascular effects of anemia correction with erythropoietin in 1992. Since 1995, he managed the hospitalization unit within the Kidney Transplantation Program at that Hospital Ramon y Cajal, and has had a very active role in the development of new immunosuppressive strategies. Dr Pascual completed a fellowship in Research and Transplantation at the University of Wisconsin, USA, in 2006-2007.
From 2009 to April 2021 he has been the Chief of Nephrology Department at Hospital del Mar, Barcelona, Spain. During the last 4 years he has also been the Hospital Medical Director. From May to December 2021 he was Chief, Nephrology Department and Kidney Transplantation at Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre, Madrid, Spain, and soon he became the Medical Director at that institution.
Dr Pascual is author or co-author of more than 1000 congress communications and more than 370 peer-reviewed journal articles, covering all areas of nephrology (citations >20.000, impact factor >1.300, h-factor 71), and has given up to 350 conferences and invited lectures worldwide.
He has a long very well-known trajectory as clinical research leader in industry sponsored and investigator-driven projects with many collaborative efforts. His main research interests include all the nephrological important topics, but are mainly focused on clinical immunosuppression and kidney transplantation in the elderly and frail renal patient.
He has been a council-member of the Spanish Society of Nephrology (2008-2014), and the Spanish Society of Transplantation (2011-2014). He has been a Board member of the Descartes Group (Developing Education Science and Care for Renal Transplantation in European States), the transplantation group within the ERA-EDTA (2012-2017). Dr Pascual is also member of the European Best Renal Practices Group and KDIGO developing guidelines for kidney transplantation. He is a member of the major nephrology and transplantation societies and is on the editorial boards of several relevant scientific journals.
