Description |
The Erasmus Medical Center (MC) is located in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. It is the largest university medical center in The Netherlands and is recognized as a leading innovator in healthcare. Erasmus MC is committed to achieve a healthy population and pursue excellence in healthcare through research and teaching. The Division of Nephrology and Transplantation is part of the Department of Internal Medicine and covers the full breadth of nephrology with a focus on tertiary care. Together with pediatric nephrology, we coordinate the Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Rare Kidney and Urinary Tract Disease. Our nationally approved expertises are tubulopathies, cystic kidney disease, idiopathic nephrotic syndrome and congenital anomalies of the kidneys and urinary tract (CAKUT). We have dedicated outpatient clinics for tubulopathies and autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). Our active research program aligns with this focus on tubulopathies and ADPKD and combines laboratory and clinical studies (www.RotterdamKidneyLab.com). In our wet lab we focus on the regulation of kidney transport proteins and the implications for human disease. We have identified and characterized mutations causing novel tubulopathies including in SCNN1A and KCNJ16. A specific line of research is the isolation and characterization of urinary extracellular vesicles and their application as a source of urinary biomarkers, including for inherited kidney diseases. Clinical research focuses on investigator-initiated intervention studies in patients with tubulopathies and ADPKD. |
