Description |
The Pediatric Nephrology Unit is the referral center for the diagnosis and treatment of kidney diseases in children and adolescents in North-East Italy. It provides comprehensive care for congenital and acquired nephropathies, as well as for acute and chronic kidney failure, with dedicated expertise across all pediatric age groups. The Unit is recognized as a national center of excellence for pediatric kidney transplantation, having performed over 500 transplants – particularly in infants, young children, and patients with complex urological conditions. The multidisciplinary team includes 7 attending physicians, 2 PhD students, 8–10 residents and interns, 24 specialized renal nurses, 1 dietician, and 1 clinical psychologist. Clinical services are delivered through a 12-bed semi-intensive care ward (approximately 350 admissions per year) and a dialysis unit performing over 3,500 hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis sessions annually. The Unit offers all modalities of acute kidney replacement therapy, including those tailored to neonates and small infants. Outpatient clinics provide specialized care for patients with CAKUT, primary and secondary glomerulonephritis, tubulopathies, rare kidney diseases, and systemic hypertension. The Unit also operates a dedicated nephrological ultrasound clinic. It hosts a Laboratory of Immunopathology and Molecular Biology of the Kidney and plays an active role in academic teaching at the University of Padua – supporting the School of Medicine, the Pediatrics and Nephrology Residency Programs, the PhD School in Developmental and Planning Sciences, and the Master’s Program in Pediatric Nephrology. Research is an integral part of the Unit’s mission, with active participation in national and international studies, including clinical trials, clinical epidemiology, and translational research. |
