Description

Fundació Puigvert is an internationally renowned nephro-urological monographic center integrated in the Hospital de Sant Pau in Barcelona and part of the Autonomous University of Barcelona. Its research is performed within the Sant Pau Biomedical Research Institute (IIB Sant Pau).

Over 14500 patients with kidney disease are visited every year in the nephrology department. We are performing KRT, (with more than 1800 sessions of HD last year) and around 100 adult renal transplantations (25% from living donors) per year. Our multidisciplinary teams offer full medical and psychosocial services, with a 24h a day service. Fundació Puigvert is a CSUR (Spanish Reference Center) for complex glomerular disorders and a Reference Unit (UEC) in Catalonia recognized by the CATSALUT for rare kidney diseases. There is an Inherited Kidney Disease unit in the Clinical Nephrology department coordinated by Roser Torra. It follows up more than 800 patients and receives clinical consultations and requests for genetic studies from all over Spain and abroad. The molecular biology laboratory, led by Elisabet Ars performs over 500 genetic tests for IKD every year and has developed NGS approaches for molecular diagnosis by using a kidney panel. The Glomerular diseases Unit is leaded by Montserrat Díaz and follows more than 1500 patients with glomerular diseases, being 40% of them considered complex. Anna Bujons is the chair of pediatric urology as in charge of CAKUT, she is also the coordinator for our Institution at eUROGEN. These units work in collaboration with the Hospital de San Pau through the multidisciplinary teams and receive residents for training from all over Spain and abroad. We work in close collaboration with the obstetrics and pediatric groups at Hospital de Sant Pau and offer prenatal diagnosis as well as preimplantation genetic testing for genetic kidney conditions.
We are working in close collaboration with the patients’ associations, have developed several tools to inform and provide education programs to patients and families, and to train colleagues on the rare renal diseases.
