Dear colleagues,
we are pleased to share with you the release of the publication “Antimeningococcal Protection in Patients Receiving Terminal Complement Inhibitors” in Kidney International Report.
A recent study using ERKReg data, led by Vujovic et al. (2025) and supported by the ERKNet TMA Working Group, explored the effectiveness of combining vaccination with continuous antibiotic prophylaxis in patients receiving terminal complement inhibitors (C5i).
The study found that, although current guidelines recommend vaccination alone, combining vaccination with antibiotics significantly reduced the risk of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD), with a six-fold lower incidence in patients receiving both protections. The findings emphasize the importance of adherence to both vaccination and antibiotic protocols, suggesting that combined protection offers superior defense in this high-risk population. Continued monitoring within ERKReg is essential to refine preventive strategies for patients on long-term C5i therapy.
Congratulations to all authors and collaborators on this study!
Best wishes
Your ERKNet Team
