Dear colleagues,
we are excited to announce the launch of the Clinical Practice Recommendations on Kidney Management in Methylmalonic Acidemia: an Expert Consensus Statement From ERKNet and MetabERN in KI reports.
This initiative, led by the European Reference Network for Rare Kidney Diseases in collaboration with the European Reference Network for Hereditary Metabolic Disorders (Metab-ERN), involved pediatric and adult nephrologists, metabolic specialists, as well as liver and kidney transplant experts.
The guidelines emphasize the importance of accurate kidney function assessment, recommending cystatin C-based methods over traditional creatinine-based formulas. They also address the need for both acute and long-term dialysis to manage metabolic toxins and suggest that combined liver-kidney transplantation (LKT) is preferred for patients with severe cases of MMA and CKD. Furthermore, careful monitoring of immunosuppressive treatments is required to avoid potential neurotoxicity in these patients.
A total of 13 statements were created to guide the management of CKD, dialysis, and transplantation for both pediatric and adult MMA patients which mark an important step in improving the care and outcomes for patients living with MMA and associated kidney complications.
We thank all co-authors and collaborators for their invaluable contributions and expertise!
