Dr. Francesco Trepiccione MD, PhD is currently Associate Professor in Nephrology at the University Hospital of the University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli”.

He dedicated his research activity to the renal clinical and experimental physiology. He got his PhD at the Water and Salt Research Center at Aarhus University (DK) with a thesis entitled (Lithium and the Collecting Duct – a complex relationship: new mechanisms for polyuria and acid-base disorders). At this time, he acquired fundamental knowledge in basic research on the mechanisms regulating the water reabsorption along the collecting duct, completing his education at the laboratory of kidney and electrolyte metabolism at NHLBI at NIH (Bethesda, MD). Once, he came back in Naples, he transferred his knowledge on the effect of lithium on the water concentration ability to patients taking lithium. At that time, in collaboration with seminal young neurologist of the Universtiy Federico II in Naples, the SCAII trial was performed. In 2013 he got a post-doc position at the PARCC institute INSERM U970, Paris (FR), where he performed research on the molecular mechanisms regulating sodium and acid-base homeostasis along the distal nephron in Renal Tubular Acidosis. This project involved patients and mice model again with a pure translational approach.

Since 2016 he is back in Naples, dedicated his clinical and scientific activity to patients with rare renal disease, mainly focusing on patients affected by nephrogenic diabetes insipidus and renal tubular acidosis as Fanconi-Bickel and glycogen storage disease 1b patients. In this view he got support from the Italian Telethon Fundation to study an experimental model of glycogen storage disease XI and Ib.
