Dr. Vassilis Filiopoulos is Consultant Nephrologist at General University Hospital of Athens “Laiko”. He received his M.D. in 1995 at Athens National and Kapodistrian University Medical School. In July 2005 he was granted, after successful examinations, the title of medical specialty in Nephrology.In May 2007 he was appointed, after relevant examinations, as a Consultant Nephrologist in "Amalia Fleming" General Hospital of Athens.From July 2005 until my appointment to the National Health System in May 2007 he worked as a Nephrologist and Chief Nephrologist in private Dialysis Units in Athens.Between October 2009 and October 2010,he worked on a scholarship of the Greek Society of Nephrology as a Clinical Research Fellow in the West London Renal and Transplant Centre (Hammersmith Hospital), London, UK (supervisor: Professor David Taube) in the areas of Clinical Nephrology and Kidney Transplantation.In January 2013 he was appointed to his current post as a Consultant Nephrologist at Laiko University Hospital.In December 2017 he started hisPhD thesis on the role of autoimmunity in the rejection of renal allografts under the supervision of Prof John Boletis and he is currently ready to complete writing and presentation of hisPhD thesis.
His research special interests include polycystic kidney disease pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment, kidney transplantation, glomerular diseases, as well as bone and mineral disorders in chronic kidney disease and interventional nephrology.
He has a remarkable record in clinicalresearch. He has authored or co-authored a significant number of personal communications in national and international conferences as well as a significant number of publications in Greek and international journals with original thematology and significant scientific importance. Dr Filiopoulos’ publication record encompasses more than 70 scientific articles, with approximately 1000 citationsto date. His current h-index is 12. Furthermore, he co-authored a sufficient number of book chapters or monographs. He serves as expert reviewer for several distinguished journals. He has attended a large number of Greek and international conferences and postgraduate seminars. He has participated as an invited speaker in a sufficient number of conferences. He has had an active role in the educational program of his department, his hospital, as well as for the Medical School of National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, both undergraduate and postgraduate students. He has participated as a co-investigator in several clinical trialson renal anemia, kidney transplantation and glomerular disease.Moreover, he is a member of Hellenic Society of Nephrology and European Society of Nephrology. He is currently serving as Secretary of the Hellenic Society of Nephrology.
