My scientific activity has focused on hypertension, on the one hand, and acute kidney injury (AKI), on the other. In hypertension, two aspects have received special attention: ion transport and genetic factors in the origin of hypertension and associated syndromes.
Currently, my clinical (outpatient) activity is focused on secondary forms of hypertension, specifically primary hyperaldosteronism and renovascular hypertension. With regard to AKI, this activity began more recently in the context of my clinical hospital activity in 2007, basically dedicated to renal intensive care. In research, my interest is focused on clinical and basic research. Clinical research is focused on renal replacement therapy in intensive care and AKI prevention. This area has resulted in international publications, some multidisciplinary (intensive care medicine-nephrology) and many invited conferences, some international. With regard to basic and translational research, I am currently focused on ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) in murine models. In the mouse model, we demonstrated that cell therapy with M2-polarized macrophages improved renal injury parameters and subsequent fibrosis in the IRI-induced AKI model. In the mouse model, we demonstrated that cell therapy with M2-polarized macrophages improved renal injury parameters and subsequent fibrosis in the IRI-induced AKI model. We are currently about to start a phase 2 clinical trial in humans. We are currently testing a cell therapy to reduce IRI, and in the rat model we are currently engaged in a prevention strategy to reduce IRI. In addition, we have investigated the role of renal damage biomarkers in the early diagnosis of AKI and in the differential diagnosis of AKI in patients with liver cirrhosis, in collaboration with the Hepatology Service at Hospital Clínic.
I am also the editor of a book on clinical management of nephrology in critically ill patients. Currently, my interest is focused on renal therapy in critically ill patients and the prevention of AKI in ICU patients. We are currently focused on projects for the prevention of AKI and the sequelae of AKI in cardiac surgery (https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/nct04005105). My total scientific output is over 700 in 120 articles, of which I am the first, second, or senior author in more than 70. Currently, in addition to being a Senior Consultant and Head of Service, I am a researcher at the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS). From an educational standpoint, I am a Professor of Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Barcelona, where I coordinate the undergraduate course. I have supervised 4 doctoral theses and 10 undergraduate theses. In addition, I have published reviews (> 10), editorials (> 10), books (3), and book chapters (43).
