Gastón Piñeiro, completed his specialization in Nephrology (MIR) at the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona, obtaining his specialty in 2016During this period, he began research in kidney transplantation, autoimmune kidney injury, and renal replacement therapies. Upon completing his residency, he was awarded the competitive Emili Letang Fellowship from the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona for his research project titled "Study of lymphocyte populations in patients with humoral rejection in kidney transplantation," which allowed him to dedicate one year to translational research. As a result of this work, in March 2021 he completed his doctoral thesis: "Antibody-mediated rejection in kidney transplantation: response to different treatment strategies and prognostic factors." This thesis includes both clinical and translational research using animal models of transplantation and rejection in rats. The results obtained from the thesis enabled him, along with his thesis advisor, to design an Investigator-Initiated Study proposed to industry, which was granted by the company Mallinckrodt. This led to the randomized trial: "Impact of photopheresis on the prevention of acute rejection in highly sensitized de novo kidney transplant recipients" (NCT04414735), funded with €412,860. The study is currently in the patient recruitment phase. He is currently the attending physician responsible for the Semi-Critical Nephrology Care Unit and a consultant for the ICUs at the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona. At present, his work focuses on critically ill nephrology patients and immunomodulation. He is the author of 41 indexed publications.
