Prof. Laurence Heidet studied medicine at Paris 11 Medical School (1980–1986) and became a Medical Doctor in 1990. She also obtained a Master’s degree in Cell and Molecular Biology (Paris 6 University, 1992), a PhD in 1997 (Paris 5 University), and earned the Habilitation à Diriger les Recherches (Certification to Direct Research) in 2002. She is certified in Pediatrics (1990).
She trained as a Resident in Pediatrics in Paris (1986–1990) before joining the Pediatric Nephrology Unit at Hôpital Necker-Enfants Malades as an Assistant (1990–1993). From 1994 to 1997, she conducted research at Inserm U.423 under Dr. Marie Claire Gubler and Prof. Corinne Antignac on kidney development and inherited nephropathies. She later pursued a postdoctoral fellowship in the Human Genetics Unit, Medical Research Council, Edinburgh, under Prof. Nick Hastie (1997–1999).
She has since continued her research career at Inserm in inherited nephropathy and kidney development. In 2007, she was appointed Praticien Hospitalier in the Pediatric Nephrology Unit at Hôpital Necker-Enfants Malades (under Prof. Patrick Niaudet and Prof. Rémi Salomon).
Currently, she is Head of the Reference Center for Inherited Renal Diseases (MARHEA) and is also responsible for part of the molecular diagnostic testing for monogenic renal diseases in the Department of Molecular Genetics at Hôpital Necker-Enfants Malades (Prof. Romana, Prof. Steffann).
Her career combines clinical pediatric nephrology, leadership in national reference structures, and a strong focus on research and diagnostics in genetic kidney diseases.
