I graduated in Medicine at Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar, University of Porto and completed my Nephrology residency/fellowship at the Centro Hospitalar Universitário de Santo António (1994). I got a PhD in Medical Sciences in amyloid nephropathy research (ICBAS/2004). Currently, I am a senior nephrologist at CHUdSA and a Full Invited Professor of Nephrology at ICBAS. In addition, I am also the President of the Scientific Committee of the Portuguese Society of Nephrology (SPN), the vice-coordinator of UMIB and researcher at the Laboratory for Integrative and Translational Research in Population Health (ITR).
Previously, I held the position of director for the Department of Education, Training, and Research at CHUdSA, overseeing its Clinical Trials Unit from 2013-2023.
I actively coordinate ICBAS Erasmus+ Mobility Programme and cooperation agreements with Brazil and Latin-American countries. The European Renal Association selected me as a Mentor of Young European Nephrologists (2023).
My research has delved into the hereditary amyloidosis, particularly its forms associated with transthyretin and fibrinogen. I have explored the epidemiology and biomarkers of chronic kidney diseases; last year’s my clinical interest progressed to the real-life effect of ATTR therapy and the cardiorenal syndrome and Nuclear imaging related to ATTR.
