III. Department of Medicine

Description

The III. Department of Medicine is internationally renowned for its broad service for patients with kidney, rheumatologic and endocrine diseases. We are an essential part of the Center of Internal Medicine at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf. Our clinical facilities comprise three wards (total of 66 beds) including an interdisciplinary visceral kidney, liver and pancreas transplantation unit, a daily outpatient clinic with approx. 2,000 patients per year, and a dialysis unit delivering more than 9,000 dialysis per year.
Our clinical service is complemented by a wide range of research activities, which include genetic and experimental research in dedicated laboratories as well as the coordination of national and international clinical research consortia. Our groups lead nationwide patient registries and participate in numerous investigator and industry sponsored clinical trials.
Several recognized experts in their respective scientific and medical fields offer appointments in our outpatient clinic especially for patients with rare acquired or inherited disease. Together we provide full medical services including diagnostic assessment and state-of-the-art therapies in multidisciplinary teams. There is a long-standing tradition of close cooperation with patient support groups as well as involvement in all major national, European and international renal societies including participation and lead in the development of national and international guidelines.
We believe that specialization of our experts, which allows them ‘doing the rare often’, is key to both precision medicine and patient satisfaction. Appointments in our outpatient clinic can be scheduled by telephone +49 (0) 40 7410 53663 or email nierenambulanz@uke.de.
